Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD)
Temporary Anchorage Devices, or TADs, are biocompatible titanium mini-screws temporarily placed in the mouth to serve as a fixed point that can be used to move teeth to their desired position. We use TADs when desired tooth movement requires greater force. In many situations, TADs can eliminate the need for headgear which can be uncomfortable for patients.
How are TADs placed?
Placing a TAD is minimally invasive and is a quick procedure. Your orthodontist will start by numbing the site where the TADs will be placed. Once the area is numb, TADs will be placed by screwing it firmly to your jawbone. They are much easier to put in, and you may feel slight pressure during the procedure. Once the desired position of the tooth is achieved, your orthodontist may remove your TADs already.
What can I do to relieve discomfort caused by my TAD?
If you feel any discomfort or pain after the placement of TADs, take any OTC pain reliever like Tylenol.
How can I keep my TAD clean?
It is important to keep your TADs clean to prevent obstruction of movement. You may brush the area together with brushing your teeth after every meal. We will also provide you with an antimicrobial mouthwash that you should use twice daily.
