Two-Phase Treatment
At Mahen and Johnson Orthodontics, we perform the two-phase orthodontic treatment to provide efficient and personalized care for children and teens. Two-phase orthodontic treatment aims to create healthy, stunning smiles that will last a lifetime.
Phase One
Phase One Orthodontic Treatment aims to correct the development of jaws and teeth and ensure enough room for permanent teeth is available. This is the best time to identify any abnormalities in jaw development, such as narrow jaws, underdeveloped upper and/or lower jaws, and even skeletal deformities.
Using palatal expanders is the most common appliance used in Phase One treatment. It aids in expanding the jaws to create more space for permanent teeth while the jaws are still growing.
Resting Period
During this phase, Dr. Mehan and Dr. Johnson will monitor and let permanent teeth emerge. If Phase One treatment is successful, your child’s permanent teeth will come out in the right places in the proper position. Once all permanent teeth have erupted, we will determine whether or not Phase Two treatment is needed.
Phase Two
Patients typically need another treatment after the rest of their permanent teeth have erupted. However, this is not always the case. Phase Two involves the alignment of teeth into ideal positions or establishing a good bite.
Phase I usually occurs at ages 8 to 10. While Phase II usually happens at age 12+ and can last from 12 to 24 months.
